Fudge Frosting Recipe

This fudge frosting is an absolute staple in my kitchen, but it is anything but basic! I am honestly SHOCKED that it hadn’t found its way onto my website until now. I seriously use this all. of. the. time. You can find it on my chocolate cake cookie, my homemade cosmic brownies, my peanut butter bar cookies, my chocolate sugar cookie bars, and more!

Ingredients

*You can find instructions and exact quantities in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Salted butter, softened – I like to use salted butter, but you can sub in unsalted butter if that is your preference. If you choose unsalted butter, add an extra pinch of salt to the dough.
  • Cream cheese, softened – Use the cube of cream cheese, not the ‘spreadable tub for bagels’ kind.
  • Dutch processed cocoa powder
  • Powdered sugar
  • Vanilla extract– Adding in vanilla gives this frosting a nice foundation of flavor.
  • Milk to thin, if needed

How to Make Fudge Frosting

  1. Start by whipping the butter and cream cheese until smooth. You can do this with an electric hand mixer or in the bowl of a stand mixer.
  2. Next, add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing until it is combined before adding another cup.
  3. Scrape down the sides and add in the cocoa powder and the vanilla.
  4. Finally, add in milk 1 tsp at a time until you’ve reached your desired consistency.
  5. Use on brownies, bars, cookies or even cakes!

How should I store this frosting?

Store finished frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Before using, let the frosting sit at room temperature for a few minutes and give it a good stir.

You can also freeze the frosting, just be sure to use within 3 months! Let it thaw in the fridge and then re-whip it before using.

(And yes, you can totally freeze your baked goods with the frosting on it).

Why is my frosting too thin?

You probably added too much milk! You will adjust the thickness of the frosting by adding more milk to thin until it is your desired consistency.
