Recipe for Orange Chicken

If we’re eating out, chances are I’m requesting chinese food primarily so I can devour orange chicken. But let’s be real, ordering chinese takeout every week just isn’t practical. Luckily, this homemade orange chicken recipe is every bit as delicious as the takeout place down the street.

Made with rotisserie chicken for ease, this sauce is spectacularly sweet, tangy and quick. You can literally whip it up in 10 minutes! Customizable, you can serve up homemade orange chicken any day of the week with extra veggies, over rice, or with a side of egg rolls. Feel free to bookmark this page for your dinner playbook because you’ll be running back week after week after week.

Ingredients in this Easy Orange Chicken Recipe

  • Soy sauce – You can definitely sub in low sodium soy sauce!
  • Orange juice – I keep little bottles of orange juice in my pantry just for this purpose!
  • Water
  • Granulated sugar – The sugar will help cut the salt in this savory sauce (and add the perfect amount of sweetness!)
  • Ground ginger
  • Garlic powder
  • Red pepper flakes – Adjust the heat of this sauce with the red pepper flakes. I am a wimp when it comes to spice and can only handle ¼ of a tsp.
  • Cornstarch
  • Diced rotisserie chicken – I love just tossing in the rotisserie chicken to make this such an easy meal but you can of course use any other type of cooked chicken you’d like.

What dishes can I use this orange chicken sauce for?

I love to serve this sauce over rice with a big helping of stir-fryed vegetables on the side. But this sauce is also insanely delicious as a dip for egg rolls, chicken nuggets (not the dino ones haha), and homemade wontons.

How do I store homemade orange chicken?

Once cooked, store the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When ready to serve, you can reheat on the stove or in the microwave.

Very easy to make and tasted great. Just the right amount of heat. I wonder if you tried adding grated orange peel if it might boost the orange flavor a bit. I added scallions and served it with rice.
    Thanks

I made this dish today and it is a real winner. So fast and easy to put together. I did add some chopped green pepper and served it over white rice. Delicious. Thank you for this recipe. It’s definitely a keeper.
