Chicken Chow Mein Recipe

I have a serious addiction to chow mein. It’s a weird confession, I know. But this chicken chow mein recipe is so utterly easy, filling, and delicious that I seriously want to make it every week! Because it is so easy to customize to meet my family’s needs, I can switch up the veggies I’m adding (or not adding, rather) to keep my picky eaters happy and serve up a meal that everyone is thrilled to eat!

And here’s the best part – this chow mein recipe is every bit as good as the popular restaurant dish and honestly maybe even faster to get on your table. You can whip this bad boy up in a matter of minutes, so it’s perfect for the nights that you just want to call it quits – but this way you don’t have to pay processing fees or tip someone. So next time you’re craving this unique comfort food, bust it out yourself! Your tummy and budget will thank me.

Ingredients in Chow Mein

  • ‘Super blend’ veggies – I like to use a veggie blend with Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, carrots and kale. You can choose whatever veggie combo you’d like!
  • Diced rotisserie chicken – You can use any type of cooked chicken you like, I just like to use rotisserie chicken because it makes it so dang easy! If you’re not a chicken fan, double down on veggies or add tofu instead!
  • Stir-fry noodles – I like to use the pre-cooked stir-fry noodles that you can find in the refrigerator section of Walmart, but if you can’t find them you can also cook up some rice or egg noodles. You could even resort to spaghetti noodles, if desired.
  • Hoisin sauce – This gives the dish a nice sweet + savory flavor.
  • Teriyaki sauce
  • Soy sauce – This is crucial for grounding the flavor and making this dish really shine! You can use low sodium soy sauce if you prefer!
  • Sesame oil
  • Garlic powder – Feel free to add additional seasonings, to taste.
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

How to Make Chow Mein

  1. In a large skillet, heat a small amount of cooking oil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ‘Super Blend’ veggies to the skillet. Stir-fry them for about 3-5 minutes or until they become tender. You can cover the skillet to help steam them, stirring occasionally.
  3. Once the veggies are tender, push them to one side of the skillet.
  4. Add the diced rotisserie chicken to the other side of the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the chicken is heated through and slightly browned.
  5. Combine the cooked chicken and veggies in the skillet.
  6. Add the pre-cooked stir-fry noodles to the skillet and gently toss them with the chicken and veggies.
  7. In a small bowl, mix together the hoisin sauce, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and garlic powder.
  8. Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken, veggies, and noodles in the skillet. Stir well to ensure everything is coated evenly.
  9. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the dish to heat through.
  10. Season the Chicken Chow Mein with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning according to your preferences.
  11. Once everything is heated and well combined, remove the skillet from the heat.
  12. Serve your homemade Chicken Chow Mein hot. You can garnish it with sesame seeds or sliced green onions for extra flavor and presentation. Enjoy!

What are some popular chow mein add-ins?

Chicken chow mein is one of those wonderful recipes that is easy to customize to your needs! Feel free to mix up the veggies and protein you add to make this dish uniquely yours. When it’s time to serve, I love to garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions – but those are completely optional!

How can I thicken up my chow mein sauce?

If your chow mein is runnier than you’d like, add a little cornstarch! I like to do this by putting a little cornstarch (1 tsp) into a small amount of the sauce and mixing it in with my fingers until it is dissolved (this will keep it from becoming lumpy). Then simply pour into your dish, stir and allow it to heat through like normal. If you cannot use cornstarch, I have a post all about substitutes for cornstarch you can try instead.

Can I make my Chicken Chow Mein ahead of time?

Yes, you can! Mix it up like normal and then serve in an airtight container in the fridge. When you’re ready to eat it (within 3 days), simply reheat on the stove until warm.
