This recipe for Mississippi Chicken is the ultimate savory dinner! An ode to southern comfort, this smooth & tender chicken gravy dish is hard to resist and so easy to make. Serve Mississippi Chicken over rice or mashed potatoes and pair with a variety of sides! Delicious with a green salad, a vegetable medley or sliced fruit, it’s easy to make this a complete meal. You can even toss this in the crockpot for an easy dump & go meal that you don’t have to worry about! (Speaking of which, you’ve got to try the Beef version of Mississippi French Dip Sandwiches!) So, the next time you’re looking for a winning dish that’s both easy to make and bound to impress, the Mississippi Chicken recipe should be at the top of your list!

Ingredients in Mississippi Chicken

  • Chicken broth
  • Water
  • Au jus seasoning packet
  • Ranch packet – You can sub the au jus seasoning mix and ranch mix for homemade versions, if desired. You can find recipes for these online!
  • Pepperoncinis – The pepperoncinis is where you will control the spice of this dish. If you want a big kick, add a lot of peppers and maybe even some juice. Just don’t do this if you accidentally get yellow ‘hot chili peppers’ like I did once. We were all sweating while we we were eating this!
  • Shredded rotisserie chicken – You can make this with whatever cooked chicken you have, OR toss all of this with some uncooked chicken tenders into the crockpot.
  • Butter, room temperature
  • Flour – You can also thicken this with a cornstarch slurry, I just prefer the paste because the butter melts to make the most buttery smooth gravy ever.

How to Make Mississippi Chicken

  1. In a large skillet, combine the chicken broth, water, au jus seasoning, ranch, and pepperoncinis. Bring to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, add the rotisserie chicken.
  3. While the rotisserie chicken is heating through, in a small bowl using a fork, combine the butter and flour into a paste.
  4. Add the paste into the boiling skillet and stir slowly while the butter melts.
  5. Let the mixture boil until the gravy thickens.
  6. Serve over rice or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!

How spicy is Mississippi Chicken? Can I adjust the heat level?

You can make this as spicy as you’d like – simply adjust the quantity of pepperoncinis (and type) you add!

Can I substitute the au jus seasoning with something else?

If you don’t have au jus seasoning on hand, you can make your own! You should be able to find an assortment of recipes for this online.

This recipe was delicious! I don’t like spice, so I left out the peppers and it was perfect. I just found you on IG and will follow for more. Thank you.
