Juicy, fresh watermelon is the pinnacle of summer! But I always dreaded buying them until I figured out the perfect way to cut a watermelon.
How to Cut a Watermelon
If I’m being honest, there have been times in my life where ‘well-intentioned Karli’ bought a watermelon, only for ‘lazy, doesn’t want to cut it up Karli’ let it go bad in the fridge. But I’ve finally figured out the perfect way to cut a watermelon and since I don’t gatekeep, I’m sharing the process with you!
- First, you will want to cut your watermelon in half, length-wise.
- Then, cut each half into half again, again length-wise.
- Working with 1/4 of the watermelon at a time, line the length perpendicular to you. Then, using a long knife, cut slices straight down into the watermelon without cutting all the way through the rind.
- You will then turn the watermelon and make 2-3 slices parallel with the slant of the watermelon.
- Turn the watermelon and repeat step 4 on the other side.
- Lastly, run your knife around the edge of the watermelon, where the watermelon turns white.
- Dump the cubed watermelon into your desired bowl.
- Repeat with the remaining 3 quarters of watermelon.
How should I store my watermelon?
Once cubed, store your watermelon in an airtight bowl in the fridge for 3-5 days!
Any tips for serving watermelon?
I love watermelon plain, but I recently had a friend put lime on her watermelon and it was a game changer! I also really like adding a little salt or Tajin seasoning (I know, it sounds weird but it’s good!)

This is also how I cut my watermelon. One tip. Put those cubes in a bowl that has a steamer basket in it. That way the juices collect underneath and the watermelon doesn’t get soggy.
