The BEST Easy Hand Pies

These Hand Pies are a minimal effort treat with a lot of heart! Hand Pies contain all the flaky / sweet / tart flavors of your favorite pie – just in a smaller, significantly cuter, package. And the best part? This is seriously the easiest Hand Pie recipe out there. Utilizing pre-made pie crust and canned pie filling, all you need to do is assemble and bake! But hey, if you’re feeling extra domestic, you can also use homemade pie crust and make a berry compote or pie filling from scratch. Either way, you’re in for a real treat!

Looking for other sweet ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day? This recipe is part of my “Love Bites Bake-Along” series alongside the likes of Caramel Brownies, Red Velvet Snack Cakes, Valentine’s Bark, Pink Velvet Whoopie Pies and Raspberry Cheesecake Jars.

What Ingredients are in Heart Hand Pies?

  • Store bought pie crusts – Homemade pie crusts would also work! We’re just going for ease here.
  • Canned pie filling – Use any flavor of pie filling you’d like! You can also use homemade pie filling or fruit compote (like the raspberry compote in my Cheesecake Jars).
  • Egg white
  • Water
  • Sparkling sugar, if desired – Not necessary, but for sure delicious.

How to Make Easy Hand Pies

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set aside.
  2. If using refrigerated pie crusts, soften before unrolling. Open one side of the package and microwave at 50% power for 20–30 seconds to soften. Alternatively, let the pie crust sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  3. Unroll the softened pie crusts and lay them flat. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out as many hearts as possible from both crusts.
  4. Place half of the pie crust heart cutouts on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of pie filling into the center of each.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and water.
  6. Brush the edges of the filled hearts with the egg wash. Place a second heart cutout on top of each filled piece. Press the edges together and use a fork to crimp and seal.
  7. Use a sharp knife to cut two small slits in the top of each pie for steam to escape. Transfer the pies to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle with sparkling sugar, if desired.
  8. Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the pies are golden brown.
  9. Let the hand pies cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!

Substitutions for Hand Pies

This recipe was designed to be ultra easy and extremely delicious. While the recipe calls for store bought pie crust and pie filling, you can definitely use homemade of either. Here’s my favorite pie crust recipe and the fruit compote from these Cheesecake Jars would be incredible in these!

  1. Looking forward to trying these. I have a couple of different sized heart cutters, could you tell me the size of yours so I have an idea which one will work the best? Thank you so much!

  2. 5 stars
If I freeze these before baking, how long would you bake from frozen? Thank you so much for sharing this easy recipe.

    1. Hi – I would let them thaw while the oven is preheating and then bake like normal. You can add a little time if needed, until the pies are golden brown.
