Oven Baked French Fries are fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside! Soaking the potato slices in water and then baking them at two temperatures are the tricks that will make these french fries the best you’ve ever tasted!
French Fry Expert
I am a self proclaimed french fry expert. I seriously love my fries. In fact, at restaurants I decide what to order based on if fries come with it.
So, what makes the perfect fry? Thinly sliced, fluffy centers with a crispy, chewy outer layer. The fry has to hold up to some serious dipping too. Fries and dip go together like milk and cookies.
Ketchup, ranch, barbecue sauce, honey mustard, fry sauce… (Can you guess where I’m from? 😉 ) The dipping possibilities are endlessly delicious.
How to make the Perfect French Fry
First, you’ll need plain old potatoes. I usually use russet potatoes. I am a skins on kind of girl, but you go right ahead a peel those babies if you want.
You’ll want to slice the potatoes into thin fries. I usually shoot for about 1/4″ to 1/2″ square slices of potato.
Soak the potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes. This helps to draw the starch out of the potatoes which helps to make these CRISPY!
Pat the potatoes dry then toss the potatoes in a little oil and season. Line the french fries up in a single layer on a Parchment paper lined cookie sheet.
Parchment paper is a MUST. I have tried lining the pan with foil and using nothing to line the pan. Both times the fries stuck and didn’t turn out. Again, parchment paper is a must here!
Bake at 350° for 30 minutes, stirring and seasoning (some more!) the fries at the 15 minute mark. Then bump the temp up to 450° and stir the fries every 10 minutes until golden.
As the french fries bake, the seasonings get weaker and weaker. I usually season a little every time I stir the fries.
Seasonings and Dips
French fries are very basic which means the take on flavor very well! I really like to just season my fries with salt and do that the majority of the time. Sometimes, however, things just need to be switched up sometimes.
Try seasoning your fries with some dry ranch dressing mix, taco seasoning or seasoned salt!
Ketchup is usually my go to dip. There was a restaurant I went to a few times growing up that would serve barbecue sauce mixed with mayo for their french fries. I still do that on occasion! It is actually really good.
I also like to dip in ranch, honey mustard or fry sauce.. yes fry sauce. It’s a Utah thing, but I think it should be an everywhere thing. SO GOOD, PEOPLE!!

this worked out so well! the only difference is that instead of oil, i tossed them in ‘real’ mustard – but the result was out. standing.

I have made this Recipe several times. The parchment paper it a bit awkward when it comes to stirring the fries. I have been making it in a couple of cast iron pans without it sticking (be sure they are well cured). It comes out great!
