Instant Pot apple sauce recipe is an easy snack

Instant Pot Applesauce-The perfect Beginner Recipe!

When I first made applesauce in my Instant Pot, I was honestly FLOORED at how easy it was!

The fact that it tasted AMAZING with only 2 ingredients and almost no work had me sold on my Instant Pot for life.

I really think that all new Instant Pot owners need to make this their first recipe. It will blow your mind!

Water test then applesauce, capeesh?

How to Make Instant Pot Apple Sauce

First let’s talk about the apples.

Pick your favorite apple and make this apple sauce using that apple. We really like Pink Lady apples or Honey Crisp apples at our house.

If you are a Granny Smith Apple fan, go for it!

Your applesauce will taste like whatever apple you choose.

For this batch I used Pink Lady apples because they were the apples that were on sale. ?

Wash the apples and then cut the apples as pictured below. Basically, cut around the core.

apple cut for apple sauce.

The apple slices don’t need to be the same size, that won’t matter.

The apples don’t even need to be peeled. Nope, I’m not kidding. Told you this recipe had minimal work!!

Place water in the Instant Pot liner. The amount of water will depend on how thick you want your final Sauce. I like mine a bit thicker so I add 1/2 cup of water to the liner. You can add up to 1 cup.

I know what you are thinking.. ‘But, Karli! The Instant Pot needs 1 cup of liquid to come to pressure! I think I’ll get the burn notice with only using 1/2 cup of water.’

Answer: As everything is heating up, the apples let off enough liquid to equal 1 cup of liquid so everything is fine and dandy. ?

Cook on Manual HIGH for 4 minutes, NPR 5 minutes and then a controlled quick release of the remaining pressure. A controlled quick release means letting the pressure out with little spurts instead of flipping the knob all the way to vent and keeping it there.

Apple sauce is one of those recipes that can be known for Volcano-ing. The controlled quick release will curb the Volcano. ?

Then, using a fork, pull the peels of the apple out of the Instant Pot. You’ll be surprised at how easy this is! They just separate themselves from the apple!

Once all fo the peels are out, use a whisk to stir the apples. At this point you can add sugar to sweeten if needed. Cinnamon can also be added at this point if desired.

I usually add about 1/8 cup of sugar to my batch of applesauce.

The applesauce will keep well in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Can the recipe be successfully doubled?

  2. karlibitner says

    August 1, 2018 at 11:28 am

Yes! I would suggest doing a complete natural pressure release though. When doubled this tends to spurt out the top! If you do a full NPR you won’t have that issue. Hope this helps!

Can you add strawberries or other fruit to this recipe?

  4. karlibitner says

    September 3, 2018 at 8:08 pm

Yes! That would be absolutely delicious! Just substitute swap out a few apples for some strawberries and give it a go!

Hi, I actually have a box of apples to make into applesauce today. But I’ve never used my instapot and am not quite sure how!! Do I put the lid on before I hit the manual button? If you could just explain the exact steps for that and a natural release I would appreciate it! Thanks!

  6. karlibitner says

    September 4, 2018 at 12:39 pm

Hi Emily! Yes, you will close the lid, make sure the knob on top is set to ‘seal’ and then press the manual (or pressure cook, different models call the same function different things!). Use the plus and minus buttons to adjust the time. It will then beep and say ‘ON’. It will say on for quite a while as the Pot comes to pressure. A few minutes after the pot comes to pressure (the pin by the knob on top will pop up) it will start counting down. To Natural Release you will do nothing. Natural release or NPR, is a fancy way of saying ‘let the pot release pressure on its own’ aka you let it sit for the allotted time the recipe calls for. The display will start to count UP after the initial cook time is finished so it is easy to tell how long the pot has been natural releasing for. Then you will quick release, or turn the knob to finish releasing the pressure. Hope this helps!! ?

If I wanted to try this with say 4 apples, would I change the amount of water? Or still do 1/2 or 1 cup?

  8. karlibitner says

    September 7, 2018 at 9:02 pm

Hi Cristy! I would do it with 1/2 cup of water. ?

I just made this tonight and used half pink ladies and half honeycrisp apples. Also added in 1 cinnamon stick. So delicious! Thank you for sharing this!

Delicious, when I tried to remove the skins they fell apart so I left them. By far the best recipe I’ve made in my instantpot. I added a little cinnamon but the gala apples I used were so sweet I didn’t need sugar.

Emily don’t forget to put the liner in the lid before putting the lid on. I have so many times forgotten the liner and I will go see why it hasn’t come to pressure yet and I see steam coming out from all sides. It’s easy to forget for I don’t leave my liner in my lid, I hang it up to dry. Hope this helps!

Wow! Delicious, easy and fast! I like that. I left the peels on and went to remove them after they pressurized, that was the most work of all, lol! Will definitely make this more often. Thank you Karli for sharing your recipes. It’s a winner!!

What size apples do you use for this recipe? I have small apples and was wondering if I needed to increase number of apples to 10.

  19. karlibitner says

    October 26, 2018 at 8:06 am

Increasing to 10 would be great for this recipe if using small apples. Hope you love it!

    Hello!
I was wondering if you can peel the apples prior to putting them into the Instant Pot? Does it make a difference overall?

    Thank you!
