The PERFECT Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

I have been baking for a looooong time. Growing up, after church each Sunday I would scour through my mom’s cookbooks and pick a treat to make for my family and then I would take some around to neighbors and friends.

I have made a lot of chocolate frosting in my day. I have added every little ‘secret ingredient’, done all of the tricks. I think I have finally nailed the perfect chocolate buttercream frosting and guess what? Simple, basic ingredients is all you need!

This frosting is sooo chocolatey and rich. The perfect, true chocolate frosting.

chocolate frosting made from butter, powdered sugar, cocoa, vanilla, milk and heavy cream.

How to Make Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

To make the chocolate buttercream frosting you’ll need a few basic ingredients. Butter, powdered sugar, cocoa, vanilla, milk and a little bit of heavy cream.

I think the heavy cream makes this frosting ULTRA creamy. It definitely could be omitted if you are in a pinch, but promise, promise, promise you’ll try it with heavy cream once. It is so tasty!!

First, measure out and whisk together the powdered sugar and cocoa powder in the bowl of a stand mixer.

After the powdered sugar and cocoa are whisked together, add the butter, vanilla and milk to the bowl.

Using the paddle attachment, combine the ingredients. Start slowly until the the ingredients start to come together and then increase the speed. Lastly, add the heavy cream and beat the frosting for a minute or two until well combined.
