Edible Brownie Batter Recipe

To make this brownie batter edible, we will exclude eggs and heat-treat the flour to make it completely safe to eat. This recipe is also great because you can include any of your favorite mix-ins like chocolate, peanut butter chips, caramel, or whatever else your heart desires!

Ingredients for Brownie Batter

  • All Purpose Flour – We will heat-treat the flour to make it perfectly safe to eat.
  • Melted Butter – The melted butter gives us the perfect brownie batter texture.
  • Brown Sugar
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Milk – The milk will replace the liquid that we usually get from eggs in regular brownie batter.
  • Vanilla
  • Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder – This is my FAVORITE dutch processed cocoa. However, you can use regular unsweetened cocoa powder if needed.
  • Salt
  • Chopped Chocolate – You can either chop a chocolate bar or use chocolate chips – whichever you have on hand will work great.

How to Make Edible Brownie Batter

  1. Begin by heat-treating the flour (this is what makes it safe to eat). Measure out the flour into a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Microwave on high for 30-45 seconds to heat treat the flour.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until mixed thoroughly.
  4. Next, whisk in the milk and vanilla.
  5. Now fold in the heat treated flour, cocoa powder and salt and mix until a brownie batter forms.
  6. Finally, fold in the chopped chocolate (or your other favorite mix-ins).
  7. Enjoy!

What can I add to brownie batter?

Brownie Batter is a great base to add any of your favorite mix-ins. Some of my go-to mix-ins are:

  • Peanut butter chips
  • Caramel swirl
  • Peanut butter swirl
  • Chocolate chips
  • Fudge swirl
  • White chocolate chips
  • Nutella

Is brownie batter safe to eat?

As long as you follow the recipe and heat treat the flour, this brownie batter is completely safe to eat without baking.

How to store leftover brownie batter:

Store your leftover brownie batter in the fridge for up to 1 week. You can also freeze this brownie batter for up to 3 months. If freezing, be sure to allow the brownie batter to come to room temperature before eating.

My son loves brownies so when I saw your recipe I had to try it. It was delicious. We both loved it. My son even asked if this could be baked so I have an individual brownie square pan so I filled one and baked it at 350F for 20 minutes and we were both surprised it worked. What a fun recipe!

Delicious! A lot of edible cookie doughs don’t get the right texture but this edible batter was amazing. Eating it from the fridge reminded me of eating a cosmic brownie (so next time I might put in mini M&Ms to chase that feeling!)

  3. The recipe indicates 8 servings, but what size are they? When I halved the recipe, it filled one and a half 4 oz mason jars. Thank you.

Omg this is amazing! I made a half batch of the batter and it turned out delicious! So easy to make. I should not have found this recipe!

Delicious. I’ve made it 3 times now. I love mixing in crushed Oreos and I have a few spoonfuls at night when I get home from work.

    1. I have never tried that! If you’re going to try, I would recommend freezing the brownie batter in dollops before wrapping in the braided roll to keep it from seeping out. You’ll have to let me know how it turns out!
