Hello, muggles! If you’ve been dreaming of a visit to the Three Broomsticks for their worlds famous butterbeer, today is your lucky day!

What is Butterbeer?

While butterbeer started as a fictitious beverage in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy Harry Potter world, it is now a known favorite among Potterheads and other muggles alike.

Butterbeer is a frothy, creamy beverage that is sure to cast a spell on your tastebuds. Rich butterscotch sweetness harmonizes with vanilla and caramel and is topped with a dollop of butterscotch foam. With each sip, you’re sure to feel magic course through your veins and transport you to a world where broomsticks fly and mail is delivered via owl.

The best part? This butterbeer recipe is easier than your potions class and quicker than a ride on a Firebolt. To put it simply, if you’re looking for a simple, fun, and delicious way to amplify your next Harry Potter movie marathon or party, try making butterbeer today.

Homemade Butterbeer Ingredients

  • Cream Soda, chilled – You can just use plain cream soda and not add the additional flavorings, but the flavorings are the real magic that take it to the next level.
  • Butter Vanilla Bakery Emulsion – If you don’t have the butter vanilla bakery emulsion, you can use butter extract. Watkins is a great brand that can be found at Walmart.
  • Caramel Bakery emulsion – Again, if you don’t have the emulsion, you can use caramel flavoring (Watkins is a great accessible brand).

Butterbeer Butterscotch Foam topping:

  • Whipping cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Butterscotch flavoring – The butterscotch flavoring can be substituted with butterscotch ice cream topping, but it will make the foam thinner. I prefer Lorann Oils super strength flavoring. They can be purchased on amazon or directly from their website. If purchasing on their website, KARLI20 will give you 20% off!

How to Make Butterbeer

Butterbeer Butterscotch Foam:

  1. To make the butterscotch foam, in the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or using an electric hand mixer, beat the whipping cream on high speed until it starts to thicken.
  2. Once it starts to thicken, add the powdered sugar and butterscotch flavoring. Continue beating on high speed until it has reached your desired thickness.

Pitcher of Butterbeer:

  1. To make a pitcher of butterbeer, add the cream soda, butter vanilla bakery emulsion and caramel bakery emulsion to a large pitcher and stir to combine.
  2. Top the pitcher with the butterscotch foam and stir gently to thin slightly into the drink.

Single Serving Butterbeer:

  1. To make a single serving, make the entire batch of butterscotch foam and store in the fridge in an airtight container until needed.
  2. Pour a glass of cream soda, add a drop or two of both the butter vanilla bakery emulsion and the caramel bakery emulsion.
  3. Top with a scoop of the foam topping and gently stir to thin the foam while letting it sit on top of the drink.
  4. Enjoy!

Best Butterbeer Recipe Storage

Feel free to make your butterscotch foam in advance and store separately in the fridge. Then when you’re ready, mix everything together and serve immediately. I suggest storing the foam topping separately and then mixing everything together right before serving.
