What makes this the Best Recipe for Buttermilk Syrup?

This recipe for homemade syrup is remarkably easy! With only 5 ingredients, it honestly takes me less time to whip this up on my stove than it does to wrestle the sticky syrup lid off of my maple syrup canister. And, in my opinion, the flavor is superior, too!

I fell in love with buttermilk syrup because it is creamy, slightly foamy, and has an unreal sweet flavor that is unmatched. Plus, it doesn’t stain little kid shirts, which is always a win in my book. Pour it warm over your pancakes, french toast, waffles and more!

Buttermilk Syrup Recipe ingredients

  • Salted butter – I always use salted butter because that’s what’s on-hand in my kitchen. You can also use unsalted butter and add a little salt to the syrup.
  • Granulated sugar
  • Buttermilk
  • Vanilla extract – This gives the syrup a delicious, sweet and delectable flavor.
  • Baking soda

How to Make Buttermilk Syrup

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring the butter, sugar and buttermilk to a boil while stirring constantly.
  2. Once boiling, remove from heat.
  3. Add in the vanilla and stir until combined.
  4. Next, stir in the baking soda. The baking soda will cause the syrup to foam and bubble.
  5. Serve immediately over pancakes, waffles, or French toast. Enjoy!
  6. Store leftover syrup in the fridge for up to 5 days.

How to use this Homemade Buttermilk Syrup

This is hands down my absolute favorite syrup. I love using this on pancakes, waffles, french toast or even crepes!

How to store Buttermilk Syrup

Place your leftover syrup in any container you’d like, I typically use a tupperware or a small mason jar. Then store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Does buttermilk syrup need to be refrigerated?

Yes, it does! Because it has buttermilk and butter in the recipe, you’ll want to keep it chilled. Just warm before re-serving.

Best Buttermilk Syrup Recipe FAQs

What makes homemade syrup thick?

If you boil your homemade syrup too long, it will become thicker. Make sure that you remove it from the heat after it starts to boil before adding the final ingredients.

Why is my homemade syrup hard?

Again, syrup will become too hard if it boils too long – becoming more of a candy than a syrup.

Its easy to make, tastes delicious the day you make AND still tastes amazing after it’s been stored in a jar for a few weeks. Just pop it in the microwave and use it on your favorite breakfast food. I remember a restaurant down the road from me when I was little, that I used to have this type of syrup. It brings so many happy memories for me that as soon as I found this, I had to try it. At this point, I don’t even know how many times I have made this recipe; probably 5? It is delicious and I can’t get enough of it! I make it with vegan butter and vegan buttermilk mixture and it turns out amazing every time.
