Halloween Cookie Decorating

Decorating cookies for any occasion is just a recipe for a great time in the kitchen.

Halloween takes that to a whole new level! My kids and I love the (cute)creepy & crawlies, like lollipop ghosts or bat oreo cookies!

These Chocolate Mummy Cookies are definitely fit into that category, too.

I usually keep a few to myself and then let my kids go crazy with the frosting. You really can’t mess up a mummy too bad!

Plus, these cookies taste amazing! From the super chewy chocolate cookie to the sweet vanilla buttercream, these cookies are a home run!

How to make the Chocolate Cookie

This chocolate cookie is a very basic recipe that yields such a chewy, rich cookie time after time! To start, Brown sugar, white sugar and butter are first creamed together. It is important to cream until it is light and fluffy.

This process will take a couple of minutes but you will see that the color and texture actually changes if you cream it long enough! The ‘light’ in the phrase ‘light and fluffy’ is referring to the color of the mixture. The mixture should not be grainy at all.

Next, the eggs and vanilla go in. Mix those until well combined.

The flour, cocoa powder, soda, salt and cornstarch are then mixed in. Mix thoroughly until all the flour is combined.

Scoop the cookie dough and arrange on a cookie sheet. Use the back of a drinking to glass to flatten the cookies. You can make the cookies as thin or thick as you’d like here. They shouldn’t’ change shape much while baking.

Bake at 350° for 6-8 minutes, or until the tops of the cookies are no longer glossy. Let the cookies cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Decorating the Cookies to look like a Mummy

Decorating is super simple! You can purchase Royal Icing Eyeballs at most grocery stores, but I prefer to make my own using Chocolate.

I melt some white almond bark and pipe small, uniform ‘dots’ onto a silicone baking mat. Working quickly, I place one mini chocolate chip in the center of the white chocolate. Let everything cool and dry- they are ready to use and taste so much better! Plus, they won’t break your teeth!

I used my favorite Sugar Cookie Frosting to decorate the cookies. Head over to my Sugar Cookie Frosting Post for all the details, but simply put, it is butter, crisco, powdered sugar, vanilla and milk. And it’s delicious!!

Secure your eyeballs in place with a little frosting and then pipe straight lines to create your cute little mummy! Easy enough that kids can do it! And they LOVE to help!
