Homemade Slurpees- The Refreshing Treat of the Summer!!

I don’t know about you, but Summer where I live is SO hot. I mean, it’s only the beginning of June and we are hitting the 90s!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Summer. Definitely one of my favorite seasons..? If you must know, Spring is my all time fav.

I love the outdoors, swimming, beach time (I’m going to miss the East Coast this summer! I already do!), park play dates, flip flop tan lines, parades, BBQ’s, and slurpees.

Slurpees, or slushies, are a very important piece of summer at my house. Nothing cools you off after a hot bike ride like a slurpee does!

Although, if I am being completely honest, I usually save the majority of the batch in the freezer for after the kids go to bed. Once they are tucked in, Dan and I go crazy on it. #noshame

The process couldn’t be more simple, you’ll have this recipe memorized in no time!

Grape slurpee or slushy flavored with Kool aid.

Tips for the PERFECT Slurpee

  • You must use Seltzer Water. I have used flavored Seltzer Water before and it works great! I’ve also tested water and even Sprite, but no dice. Neither worked well at all. Just use Seltzer Water. ?
  • Use the powdered, un-sweetened drink powder mixes like Kool-Aid. I have tested the Kool-Aid Liquid but it didn’t work out nearly as well.
  • The pellet ice is wonderful and can be bought at Taco Time, Sonic or (pretty sure!) Chick-Fil-A for a very fair price.
  • I have a Blendtec Blender and LOVE it. I could go on and on, but I will just leave it there.

Homemade slurpee is the most refreshing treat for the summer.

I saw this recipe posted elsewhere the other day and so want to make it. I looked up seltzer water as it’s unfamiliar to me. Google searches more or less said it’s the same as carbonated and sparkling waters. I bought a carbonated bottle as the search said the others were more expensive. As a note, nothing in the grocery store was labeled seltzer water. Then onto the Kool-Aid aisle. I went up and down it 3x and could not find the packets. Since I hadn’t bought it in over 20 yrs, I assumed it’s been replaced by the liquid (that I also didn’t know about). The store confirmed they don’t sell it. I bought the liquid. I’m ready to make it and finally read your whole article to find you’re recommending seltzer water only and the sugarless Kook-Aid powder. You did say the liquid didn’t work as well. Can you elaborate? I’ve put feelers out this morning and hear the powdered version is still available in Canada but maybe just through select corner stores.

Hello Sue Marie! Wow, I had no idea that Powdered Kool-Aid would be hard to find. We have a whole isle of it here in the states still.

The plain carbonated water will work, that is very similar if not the equivalent of seltzer water.

If the liquid Kool-aid is already sweetened (which I think it is) you won’t need as much sugar. I would probably half the sugar and then experiment to see how much liquid kool-aid is needed for a good flavor.

The powdered Kool-aid will work much better, but if you don’t have access to it, I say go right ahead try out what you have!

I hope this helps! ? let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for the reply. I hadn’t got notice of it, even though I checked that box and also the one to remember me for future posts which didn’t work either), Ijust saw it now as I came back here to get the link to share. I managed to get my hands on some. Can’t believe the price of $.89 per packet. OUCHY! Glad the water will work. Here in Canada, like most of the US, were’ in an extreme heatwave and I wanted to have it on hand. Thanks so much!

Sue, I am so sorry you didn’t get notice of my reply, and for some reason my site didn’t remember you! (I remembered you, if that makes any difference! ?) I will look into that. Glad you got some powdered packets and are prepared for the heat! ?

So excited to try. Kool aid also comes in a tub by the liquid. It was on Amazon a few weeks ago.
