Caramel Sauce

I absolutely adore caramel! It has taken me years to admit, but I actually prefer caramel to chocolate! Which is why I love this easy caramel sauce recipe. Sure, you can buy it in the store, but why would you when this homemade caramel sauce tastes 100 times better!

This sauce is amazing and goes well on pretty much anything! I love to drizzle it over cheesecake, ice cream and brownies, or as a dip for apples or pretzels. No matter how you use it I think you will agree, things just taste better with caramel!

Ingredient needed to make caramel

4 Simple Ingredients in Homemade Caramel Sauce

  • Brown Sugar– In a pinch you could use regular granulated sugar, but the brown sugar really help gives the sauce the rich flavor that caramel is known for.
  • Butter
  • Heavy Cream– Technically you could substitute half and half for heavy cream if you needed to, but you may notice a slight difference in texture and richness.
  • Vanilla

How to Make Caramel Sauce

Caramel sauce is so quick and easy to make you will wonder why you haven’t been making it from scratch all along.

Start by combining the butter, sugar and cream in a medium sauce pot. Cook the sauce over medium heat, whisking until the sauce begins to simmer.

One the sauce is simmering let it continue to cook for an additional 2 minutes while stirring constantly. Remove the sauce from the heat and add in the vanilla. You don’t want to add the vanilla with the sauce still on the heat because too much heat will cook all that yummy vanilla flavor out of your sauce.

Let the sauce sit and cool for 15 minutes before serving, or pop in the fridge to use later. It will save for a week.

Can I Use This Recipe to Make Salted Caramel?

You can absolutely use this recipe to make salted caramel! Just add a pinch of salt to the recipe before you start cooking. I don’t love super salty salted caramel, so a pinch of salt is plenty for me, but if you like your caramel more salty you can certainly taste and adjust it according to your taste.

How Do I Adjust the Thickness of the Sauce?

This method will give you caramel sauce that is the perfect consistency for drizzling, but it is super easy to adjust the thickness of the sauce if you are looking for something a little thicker. Just simmer the sauce for longer. The amount of time the sauce is simmering will affect how thick it becomes. You can let this sauce simmer for up to 10 minutes if you are wanting a super thick sauce for dipping.

There you have it. Homemade Caramel Sauce so good and so fast, you will never buy it from the store again!
